Tempo

Support

A stopwatch that tells you how long you have been going, out loud, so you don't have to remember to check.

Common questions

It went quiet when I locked my phone

Tempo is built to keep speaking with the screen off, and it holds the audio session open for exactly that reason. If it goes silent, check that the volume is up — announcements use the media volume, not the ringer — and that another app (a call, a video) has not taken over the audio.

If iOS shut the app down entirely, and you allowed notifications, a notification still tells you when you reach your target and for the next few overrun check-ins. You can turn that off in Settings → Nudges.

My watch stopped announcing after about an hour

That is watchOS, not a bug. An app running in the background on the watch gets roughly an hour before the system reclaims it. Tempo shows "Open Tempo to keep announcements going" when it happens. Pause and resume the session to start a fresh allowance. The elapsed time is never lost — it keeps counting regardless.

For sessions longer than an hour, start on the phone.

Only one of my devices speaks

That is deliberate. When your iPhone and Apple Watch are both showing the same session, only one reads the announcements aloud — otherwise you would hear everything twice, slightly out of sync.

The device you started on is the one that talks. The other shows the time and, on the watch, taps your wrist. On iPhone, a session the watch is speaking for is marked "Announcing on your other device".

It interrupts my music

It ducks it — music keeps playing, turned down while a session runs. If you would rather have silence, turn off Speak announcements in Settings and keep Haptic pulse on; you will feel each interval while Tempo is on screen, and on your wrist for sessions started on the watch. The change applies to sessions you start afterwards.

How do I change how often it speaks?

On the Stopwatch, Timer or Alarm tab, under Alert every. A steady interval suits open-ended work. On the Timer and Alarm tabs you can also pick Quarters, or Closing in, which stays quiet early and checks in at half, three quarters, 90% and 97% of the way. On the watch it is under Check in, as a steady interval only.

Why does it suggest a longer target than I asked for?

Because your own past sessions say so. After three timers, Tempo compares the length you set with how long you actually took. If you usually run over, it shows "history says 35m" under How long? and uses that longer length as the target when you start — the correction is shown, never hidden.

Turn it off under Settings → Estimates.

Can I get my data out, or delete it?

Everything lives on your iPhone and, if you use one, your Apple Watch — nowhere else. On iPhone, Settings → Delete all sessions erases your history; deleting the app removes everything. There is no export yet — if you want one, say so.
